Molluscum

Molluscum contagiosum is a common viral infection of the skin that results in round, firm, painless bumps. Scratching the bumps can spread the infection to other areas of the body. This virus spreads from direct person to person contact. This virus affects children and adults.

Causes

Molluscum contagiosum spreads easily through direct person to person contact, contact with contaminated objects, toys, handle faucets and sexual contact with an affected partner.

Treatment

Molluscum contagiosum can disappear on its own once your own immune system detects it. However dermatologists can remove it by freezing it with liquid nitrogen in the office or prescribing a cream that may boost your own immune system to destroy the virus. To prevent the spread of the virus wash your hands, avoid touching bumps, don’t share personal items, avoid sexual contact with an affected partner, and cover the bumps.
